9 Signs God is Separating You to Get Your Attention
Are you feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated by the slightest interaction with others? Do you feel a pull in your spirit to slow things down? Do you find yourself talking and pouring out to God more than usual? Are doors of opportunity that once were fruitful beginning to dry up? Have your relationships started to fall off little by little? These could be signs that God is separating you to get your attention.
At the time of this article, I am in a season of isolation and it feels like God has truly sat me down. Being separated isn’t easy by any means, so I hope you find answers, hope, and a little encouragement during your season of separation.
As humans, it’s our nature to want companionship and relations with one another, we’re not created to be alone. We must also seek the Lord for confirmation about this separation season because depression-isolation can be a little tricky to detect. Be sure to take what you’re feeling back to the Lord.
Is this your first time in your walk with the Lord that He’s separating you to get your attention? What could all of this mean? Why is it happening? What am I to do with this time?
this post is all about 9 Signs God is Separating You to Get Your Attention
Overall it seems like God is shutting everything down around you to get your attention.
Doors of opportunities are drying up
Are you feeling discontent in some areas of your life?
Your relationships falling off left and right
Finding yourself spending more time in prayer and studying His word more than usual. You rather study over anything else.
Nothing seems to be taking off for you. It isn’t because you did anything but because God has hidden you.
Feeling the “access denied”
The WHY…
1. To Know His Voice
One thing that God is trying to teach us when he separates us from everyone is to truly know his voice.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” John 10:27
This is the time to lean into His presence and dwell with Him. With the distractions being cleared out and He now has our attention, reading His words and feeding on them regularly will help you to know His voice.
As you spend more time reading your bible you will start to learn God’s character. Kind of like when you’re reading non-fiction and you’re able to get a feel for the characters as they develop over time.
The more you spend time in the word and in prayer the better you will be at getting to know His voice. Who knows there could be steps He wants you to take, messages He wants you to speak that will require you to tune in and know the voice of God.
2. God wants to Grow You
During this season when God is hiding you, separating you, He wants to grow you, He wants to do the work within you and in your heart. Maybe there’s something that The Lord wants to take you through in private.
Often we like to think that good thing comes from God and bad things are from the enemy. Which couldn’t be further from the truth. It hurts to say things but sometimes God uses pain to bring change and maybe just maybe He wants to put you in the refinery fire during this time
But just know He is the fourth man in the fire (more on this later). When He is finished and your season of isolation is over you will be unrecognizable to yourself and others. They will see your light, they will see the glory of the Lord shining through you. So keep the faith and press through.
When God separates you it isn’t punishment but to develop you into the person you need to be for your calling. A lot of the time we will pray for something not knowing there’s a preparation process that comes before receiving what we prayed for.
Get ready for your spiritual makeover for a greater purpose.
Remember this is bigger than you. Sometimes ” doing the work” is an ugly process but in the end, the growth is unmatched.
3. God wants to Give You Clarity
God wants to give us clarity. He wants us to turn off all the noise so He can give you clear instructions on what He wants to do this season or the next.
Having clarity is so important. It is vital in our walk with Christ, He wants to remove doubts and confusion. God wants to break the chains of confusion and lack of knowledge off of his people.
God wants to remove the scales from our eyes and reveal the truth of our identity.
He wants to reveal your mission, your calling for the body of Christ.
He wants you to begin to see things correctly (Jeremiah 1:11-12) in the sight of the Lord, from His throne in heaven and the Holy Spirit.
When you begin to have these thoughts, ideas, and plans you will need clarity to know what to do. With clarity, you will know if they’re from God or a distraction, or whether or not to move with the idea or ignore it. This separation time could give you the clarity that you need.
Life-changing decisions and life-changing transitions. Divine connections and clarity from God.

4. Refinery
When God separates you from everyone, He wants to refine you. Diamonds are processed under fire and pressure. We only see the final product, we didn’t see what it took. Why? Because it isn’t a pretty process!
There are some L’s (losses) [Which aren’t losses but lessons] He wants to walk with you through them in private. There are some battles and some giants He’s called you to defeat in private.
The enemy wants you to believe that God has forgotten about you, but God has NOT forgotten about you, He’s hiding you. He’s hiding you while you get yourself together. Hold onto your faith.
To David, slaying Goliath wasn’t anything. David had been defeating lions, tigers, and bears…in private protecting his flock. So Goliath was just another beast to defeat. It was nothing out of the ordinary for David. Perhaps God wants to train you in private to defeat your giants in private so that your giants seem small in public.
5. God is Preparing you for the Next Level
He wants to give you the spiritual tools of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding that are required for where He is taking you. Shut in and armor up because the old version of you can’t go. You have to shed the old and become a new creature in Christ.
6. To Clear out the Distractions and get our Attention
When there is a call on your life God will stop at nothing to get your attention, which causes a season of isolation. He will separate and hide us for a season to clear out the distractions to get our attention.
Many times we can’t hear from the Lord because of all the distractions. Friends, family, and even social media can be a distraction, making it hard to hear Him. Sometimes the relationships with people distract us by taking up space in our minds and from spending time with The Lord. Which in turn is pulling us away from doing the work of The Lord.
It’s not that we don’t love them anymore or can no longer be friends, but when God separates you, it causes some needed distance. Don’t forcefully hold on to relationships but surrender them to the Lord. The Lord wants to get you all by yourself because He has big plans for your life. There is some work that He wants to fulfill through you.
The song “Not my own”: “My life is not my own, to you I belong, I give myself, I give myself to you” Allow God to work in you and through you during this season, so He can transform you.
Does it hurt? Does it get lonely? Of course! Some days are better than others but it’s all for you to grow a deeper relationship and connection with God. Allow him to do the needed work within you.
7. God is Hiding you from your Enemies
Many times throughout scripture God hid his servants to protect them from their enemies. He hid Moses in the desert before leading the people out of Egypt. The Lord hid David in the mountains from Saul before he was king, both hidden before being promoted. So don’t be discouraged when God separates you from everyone, when He isolates you, or when he hides you. We serve a God who hides his servants.
8. God wants You Fully Surrendered and Dependent
Going through a season of surrender can feel like God is punishing you. Ask me how I know! Surrendering is hard. Surrendering can bring out a range of emotions. Anger, frustration, doubt, annoyance, you name it!
But eventually, we get to a place where the external factors no longer provoke us like before and we release that sense of control. I once heard that control stems from the root of fear.
When we are fully surrendered and dependent on God, when adversity comes our way we can be like a tree planted by the water, deeply rooted, unshaken, and not wavering in our faith.
In what area in your life do you need to surrender to God?
9. God wants to give you Rest
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Many times we can be out-right mentally and emotionally drained, and God says come to me and I will give you rest. Learn how to find comfort and rest in the Lord other wise you will find comfort in all the wrong things and people.
We can also be spiritually tired. Are you in need of some solid rest? That could be a sign God is calling you into the secret place.
When problems arise and life begins to life, our hearts are looking for the secret place to vent and rest, but we turn to man and we overshare. Don’t allow your mouth to destroy your destiny. Learn to retreat in the Lord, and rest in the secret place.
With that being said, this season you may feel lonely or feel God is punishing you but remember you may be lonely but not alone because the Lord says in Hebrews 13:5 and Deuteronomy 31:6 that He will not leave us or forsake us.
Don’t rush your development. Don’t rush the preparation process on the backside of the mountain. Lean into his presence. Trust in the Lord’s plan for your life. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you…
and keep pressing through!
