6 Ways to teach your baby about God

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” Here are ways to Teach your Baby about God.

This post is all about 6 ways to Teach your Baby about God

1. Start Reading

Research has shown that while in the womb, babies are already developing listening, learning, and remembering primarily in the last stage of pregnancy and language skills starting as early as 10 weeks gestation. It may feel weird reading to your growing belly at first, especially as a first-time mom.

My husband and I would sit in the nursery and bond over some of our childhood faves. We never knew the world of children’s books that are out there, that teach with the sole purpose of teaching children about God.

Start day one! Read to them, even though their little minds may not understand just yet, reading to them is a great way to start teaching your baby about God. It’s never too early to start.

2. Pray with them / over Them. Even Basic Prayers

Praying with your child is the foundation for teaching your child about God. It’s laying the groundwork to raise little believers. Praying in the mornings, before going to bed, before you eat, and about anything and everything. It’s training them to be little warriors of their own.

Prayer teaches your little one not only about God and us being that example for them but prayer can also teach them to be patient. I know that my son, loves to eat, the boy gets excited when he’s locked in his high chair and sees the tray coming his way. It’s the cutest thing ever. He’d get a little squirmy before he understood the concept of us praying first and giving the Lord our gratitude and thanksgiving before eating. Now he’s quiet and patient as we pray.

3. Lead by example

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

We as parents are the best role models our children can have. We know our little ones better than anyone; of course other than God. But we know, what they need sometimes before they even say it.

So as parents, we should lead by example. Praise God out loud, Worship God in front of them, whatever that may look like, do it. Do it in front of them, get them involved. Leading by example creates a safe place to teach your baby about God, their creator.

4. For God is Love

Another way to teach your baby about God is to show love and affection in front of them. Some couples choose not to show much PDA in front of their children believing that it’s inappropriate.

God is love. So displaying what a healthy relationship looks like, hugging and kissing in front of them is teaching them about God. That also goes for hugging and loving on them, they can see and feel the love among all of you.

“We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.” ‭‭-1 John‬ 4:16

5. Kids Apps

The Bible app for kids. Now I’m sure there are more options in the world of bible apps for kids. But The Bible app for kids has been something that my son enjoys.

We started him when he was about 6 or 7 months old, we’d snuggle up on the couch. It’s a great resource that teaches your baby about God as it journeys through the bible stories in bite-size pieces in a fun and interactive way.  You also have the option to have it read the bible stories aloud.

There are trivia questions that we of course answer for him at the time but it’s nice to see him enjoy the character interaction.

6. Christian Preschool and Children’s Ministry

Our son was around the age of three we enrolled him in a Christian preschool. At that time it was his first classroom-teacher experience, other than myself of course. He’s a fairly reserved kid. So, I didn’t know how much he would retain because, after all, he’s a three-year-old boy…umm hello cars and monster trucks. But to my surprise, when I would pick him up he was full of excitement to show off his Jonah in the belly of the whale, Jesus’ promises rainbow, and the fruits of the spirit.

But it wasn’t until one day we were at home hanging out and he unprompted said “Mary and Joseph…and baby Jesus” I asked him to repeat what he’d said just to be sure. From that point on I knew the gears were turning. Fast forward he comes home and sings songs like “Yes, Jesus loves me”, which makes my heart smile.
