Getting back to God

How to get Back to God

Are you feeling like you’re in a spiritual rut, not wanting to read your bible? Does God feel distant? Does prayer feel burdensome or like a chore? Want to know how to get your spiritual life back on track? Or How to get back to God and relight that fire? You didn’t stumble across this post by chance, you’re in the right place.

Before we get into how to get back to God, relight that fire you once had and the closeness, the intimacy with God, I want to mention that there isn’t anything you can do to get right with God. No, you don’t have to “stop” sinning or living an unpleasant lifestyle before doing any of the tips. If God called Moses, who was a murderer, then He wants a relationship with you too.

Content Intake

Are you spending hours mindlessly scrolling on social media, or binge-watching video after video, show after show?

This one came right to my doorstep; because “Hi, I’m guilty!

We’re starting strong because this world has a way of telling us what we need, how we should act, and who we are, and based on all of those things will determine our worth.

Galatians 6:7-8 says, “Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.”

One minute you’re scrolling, the next, you are down some rabbit hole, and now you are discontent with either something in your home or about yourself that never bothered you before.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced it at one point in time. Being more sensitive to the spirit, and knowing when worldly things are influencing us; is key.

What are you feeding on? What are you planting in your spirit, and your heart?

Are you planting enough God? Or are we feeding on things that are pulling us further from God?

Remember what we feed grows.

Our feelings aren’t Reliable

One thing for certain, when it comes to learning how to get back to God, with all of the noise and distractions, we must know what the word says about us.

Our feelings aren’t reliable. Our feelings could change with every new thought that enters our minds. One minute we can feel okay and unworthy or alone the next.

If we’re not careful, we can wallow in those thoughts and emotions and feel hopeless and truly feel that about our lives. When you’re having a little moment, calm down, think things through, and surrender them to God.

Is there any evidence supporting my thoughts and feelings in the bible?

Well ( Hebrews 13:5 ) God says that he will never fail me and He will never abandon me.”

Meeting with Jesus

This section deserves a dedicated post of its own.

Having a meeting with Jesus is just that, a meeting. A dedicated time to put everything on the table, to pour out in prayer, and to be honest with him. Talk to God as you would a friend and tell him what is on your heart.

Be honest with God. He already knows but wants you to communicate it to him. He wants to have an intimate relationship with us.

If you feel like you are in a spiritual rut, tell him! If you find yourself not wanting to pray or read your bible that much, tell him! He wants you to come to him and pour out what’s troubling you just like you would to a friend, a spouse, or even a therapist.

It’s easy to fall away from that intimacy and hard to get it back. Sometimes it feels like we have to fight tooth and nail to get back to God, to that intimacy and the closeness we once had. Ask Him to relight that fire and the desire to read your bible.

Bible Flip-Through

One sure way how to get back to God after a dry season or a spiritual rut is by staying in your bible regularly. Coming from a spiritual funk to reading full chapters can sometimes feel burdensome, trust me, I know!

One way that I’ve found to combat that is by randomly flipping through my bible and reading previous notes and passages of scriptures I’ve highlighted. It takes away the guesswork of where to start, and what to study.

There’s just something special about doing a bible flip-through that awakens your spirit and waters those dry areas in your life.

I now do bible flip-throughs regularly and allow the scriptures to minister to my spirit.

Fasting and Prayer

If you’re looking for a fool-proof way how to get back to God, prayer and fasting will fast-track you right to the throne of God. Asking for your forgiveness for anything we may have said, done, or thought to cause the Holy Spirit to grieve.

Father, I ask for your forgiveness. And because you died on that cross all of my sins have been erased. I am a new creature in Christ. I am made new.

Prayer Scriptures:

Matthew 6:9-13, Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
10 May your Kingdom come soon.
May your will be done on earth,
    as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today the food we need,
12 and forgive us our sins,
as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
13 And don’t let us yield to temptation,
but rescue us from the evil one.

Matthew 7:7-8 (Effective Prayer) (It’s not about praying for the same thing over and over again, it’s about praying for more)

Fasting Scriptures:

Matthew 17:21 “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

If you ever find yourself lacking clarity about what God wants you to do in this season of your life, prayer, and fasting. Using Jeremiah 33:3 as permission, the Lord wants us to Ask!

Jeremiah 33:3 “Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.”

Keep your eyes fixed on God

Meditate on the word and God’s Promises will help you get back to God.

Psalms 1:1-3, Psalms 119:15, Psalms 104:34, Psalms 63:6

When things aren’t going right in your life, focus on God! When the kids are acting, focus on God! When your marriage is being tested, keep your eyes fixed on God like a horse with blinders on.

You Reap what You Sow

( input = output ) You get out of the relationship with the lord what you put in. Now we as Christians know that statement isn’t 100% true.

God says he will do exceedingly and abundantly above all understanding. Which means he isn’t keeping a tally. But follow me for a minute here.

Just because you have a bible closed on the shelf doesn’t mean you have a relationship with Christ and know the Lord. Your input, spending time, and reading your bible regularly will determine your output, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

The circumstances may change all around you but keeping your eyes fixed on God and not your problems is an act of trust and surrender.

Try Something New to Get Back to God

I love this one. Because if you’re anything like me, you like to switch things up from time to time.

Okay, say you’re doing all of the things, you’re reading your bible regularly, and you’re filtering the content. Maybe try praying aloud instead of in your head or prayer journaling.

Try listening to only worship music for a week.

Or before you read your bible worship for 10 mins.

Try listening to a particular story in the bible as you would a podcast while driving. Try to find new ways to spice things up. There are tons of resources out there.

For my visual arts learners, my favorites are The Bible Project on YouTube, and The Chosen on Angel Studio (Chefs Kiss).

Well, that wraps it up for how to get back to God. Now it’s your turn. I want to hear from you. What are some tips you’ve found that helped you get back to God in a dry season?
